Boris Pigovat (b. 1953, Odessa, USSR) studied at the Gnessin Music Institute in Moscow. Between 1978 and 1990 he lived in Tadjikistan. He taught at the local Institute of Arts; held the post of consultant to the Composer's Union; conducted the Orchestra of folk regional instruments of Tajikistan Broadcasting Corp. In 1988 he won the special distinction diploma at the International Composers Competition in Budapest for his composition "MUSICA DOLOROSA No. 2" for trombone quartet. Boris Pigovat immigrated to Israel in 1990. In 1995 he received the ACUM Prize (Society of Authors, Composers & Music Publishers in Israel) for his composition REQUIEM "THE HOLOCAUST". In 2000 he got the prize of Prime Minister of State of Israel. Now, he is studying at Bar-Ilan University in Israel for the Ph.D. His works have been performed in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungarian, Israel, Italy, Malta, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, USA. The composition "Massada" was performed at ISCM "World Music Days 2000" festival in Luxembourg. The world premiere of REQUIEM "THE HOLOCAUST" for viola & SO took place at the Memorial evening dedicated to Baby Yar tragedy (Kiev, 2.10.2001, soloist - Rainer Moog). Among his other works are: Oratorio "Eichah" ("Jeremiah's Lamentations") for narrator, soprano, choir & SO; Symphony No.l "Memorial" for SO (1987); Symphony No. 2 for StrO (1989/90); "Musica Dolorosa" for ChO (1987); "Jerusalem"- Fantasia for SO (1993); "Tachanun" ("Supplication") for SO (1996); "Massada" - Poem for symphonic wind band (1997); "Wind of Yemen" - Picture for symphonic band (2000); "Hava Nagila" - Fantasia on a Jewish theme for wind orchestra (1993); "Nigun" for StrO (1996); "Toccata" for StrO (1997); "Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" for violin & SO (1997); String quartet (1974); Piano trio (1976); Sonata for violin and piano(1980); Sonata for piano (1988); "By the Rivers of Babylon" for mixed a cappella choir (1991); "Shulamit" for flute, bassoon & harp (1996); "The Wandering Stars" for harp (1996). |
