Aviya Kopelman
Aviya Kopelman is one of the leading composers in Israel nowadays, having a distinct personal voice. She was born in Moscow and raised mainly in Jerusalem. As composer-in-residence of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, promoting new Israeli art music and bringing it to a wider audience is one of her main goals. Kopelman graduated from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and holds a second degree summa cum laude from Bar-Ilan University. Before turning 30, Kopelman won the Israel Prime Minister Prize for Composition, and the Kronos: Under 30 Project competition, where she was chosen out of more than 300 applicants from around the world to write a commissioned work for the acclaimed Kronos Quartet. Her music is performed around the world. Apart from composing, Kopelman sees a great importance in education the new generation of composers in Israel. She was senior lecturer at the Rimon School of Music for eight years, and in the Hed College of Music prior to that; she lectures at all the main music institutions in Israel, as well as teaching at her home.
