About the creation
Music for woodwinds, trombone, piano and bass is dedicated to the Israeli conductor Gary Bertini, under whose baton the Permiere took place in December 1961.
The second movement was inspired by Ray Parnes - first trombone of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra - for whom this movement is written.
The work is in three movements. the first movement uses two rhythmical motives which are treated in free rondo-variation form; only woodwinds take part, and the music displays the characteristics and the mainfold possibilities of the various instruments. The second movement is a recitative and dialogue between the trombone and the other instruments; there also appears a traditional motif from the Jewish liturgy. The third movement is inspired by the musical mentality of the Orient. It will be difficult to find here formal development as it is understood by the Western musician. It is in a free associative way that the music is conceived without any obligatory logical consequence.
