About the creation

Haiku for flute, violoncello and percussion was written in 1969. It consists of seven movements, each inspired by a Japanese poem. The poems appear as headings to each movement and may be recited before each piece is played. In the event that the poems are not recited, they should be printed in the program notes.

Haiku was first performed in 1970 at the Mew York Composers Forum by Karl Kraber, Peter Rosenfeld and Howard Van Hyning.
