About the creation

Sela (Rock) is the third in a series of works in which I wished to portray, by musical means, people who are close to me. However, Sela, like its predecessors - Peleg for baritone saxophone and symphony orchestra, and Shai for chamber orchestra - is not a programmatic work. To some extent it deals with sculpting within the orchestral sound, while seeking places that are perhaps primary, more "ritual" and "human" and less "cultural" within the spectrum of orchestral timbre. For me, this is a very exposed piece, rocky and intense, representing the musical ideas and sensations that occupy my mind at the moment. It starts with a full blast and ends in evasive solo lines of flute and piccolo. A special sonoric role is given to percussion instruments: bass drum, bells, timpani and Gongs. Oded Zehavi
