Avi Moghrabi
Avi Moghrabi was born in Holon, Israel in 1980. He began studying violin at the age of 6, and by high school, he recognized his true calling in composition, dedicating himself to this field and graduating with a major in music. His musical development was significantly shaped during his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in composition and conducting at the Buchman-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University. There, he studied composition with Prof. Josef Dorfman and Mr. Ruben Seroussi, and conducting with Mr. Vag Papian and Prof. Mendy Rodan.
As a student arriving from Israel, a country rich in diverse cultures, Avi was exposed to a wide range of influences from teachers hailing from Uruguay, the United States, Russia, Georgia, the Czech Republic, and Israel. In his compositions, he integrates the cultural knowledge gained from each teacher with rhythms from his own Israeli heritage and its Jewish spirit, as exemplified in his “Ben Nun” sonata, which incorporates Jewish tropes. He also draws additional inspiration from his family’s South American background.
Avi graduated from the Buchman-Mehta School of Music with honors and received numerous scholarships from the school, the Holon municipality, the Center for Jewish Culture and Creativity in Los Angeles, and the America-Israel Cultural Foundation. His works have been performed in numerous concerts both in Israel and abroad by various artists and ensembles. As an active composer and creator, Avi Moghrabi continues to explore the unique intersection between diverse cultural influences and his Israeli musical identity and is expected to continue contributing to contemporary musical creation.
