Ayal Adler
Ayal Adler’s compositions are frequently performed at prestigious international venues and festivals, including the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival, the Jerusalem-Berlin Intonations Festival, the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), and the Asian Composers League (ACL).
His work Resonating Sounds was commissioned by Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, receiving performances at the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall, the Lucerne Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. Additionally, his piece Crystallization was re-premiered by Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. His music has been performed extensively across the USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, the UK, Spain, Finland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Hungary, Lithuania, Croatia, South Korea, and beyond.
In Israel, Adler’s works have been premiered by leading ensembles and orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Camerata Jerusalem, the Israel Symphony Orchestra, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Meitar Ensemble, the Israel Contemporary Players, and the Tel Aviv Soloists. These performances have been conducted by prominent figures such as Omer Meir Wellber, Ilan Volkov, Frédéric Chaslin, Pierre-André Valade, and Zsolt Nagy.
Born in Jerusalem, Adler earned a diploma in piano and composition from the Rubin Jerusalem Conservatory, followed by a B.Mus. and an Artist Diploma in composition (with honors) from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. He later completed his Doctorate in Composition at McGill University in Montreal.
Since 2001, Dr. Adler has served as a full-time senior lecturer in composition and theory at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Over the years, he has held key academic positions, including Chair of the Composition and Conducting Faculty and Dean of Students. He currently serves as Director of the Israeli League of Composers (ISCM Israel).
Adler is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including First Prize at the RMN Music International Composition Competition in London (2018) for his work Chase, two Prime Minister’s Awards for Composers (2008 and 2022), and two ACUM Prizes (2003 and 2012). He has also received commissions from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and was awarded a Fulbright Grant for his doctoral studies.
From 2006 to 2012, Adler was composer-in-residence for the Meitar Ensemble, later assuming the role of the ensemble’s artistic advisor. Four albums featuring his works have been released in recent years. His compositions are regularly published by the Israel Music Institute (IMI) and the Israel Music Center (IMC), and are broadcast on international platforms including BBC Radio 3, Radio Swiss, Radio France, and Kan Kol HaMusica.
