Haim Permont
Haim Permont was born in 1950 and immigrated to Israel, settling in the kibbutz of Kfar Gilady in the Upper Galilee at the age of six. In 1985, he earned his Ph.D. in Composition from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA. That same year, he joined the faculty of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, where he served as a professor of Composition and Theory of Music. Over the years, he held various administrative roles, including Chair of the Department of Composition, Conducting, and Theory of Music; Dean of the Faculty of Composing, Conducting, Theory of Music and Musical Education; Dean of Students; and Vice President for Academic Affairs, until his retirement in 2018.
Permont was the composer-in-residence for both the Haifa Symphony Orchestra and the Rishon Lezion Israeli Symphony. His body of work includes chamber music, vocal music, music for theater and cinema, and compositions for the multi-media Zik group. His works have been performed in Europe, the United States, Australia, and China. Among the awards he has received are the Prime Minister’s Prize for Composition, the Margalit Prize for Theater Music, and three ACUM prizes, including the Prize for Life’s Achievements.
