Verdina Shlonsky

Verdina Shlonsky, born January 22, 1905 in Russia, began her musical education at an early age in Russia and continued her studies in Berlin as a pupil of the famous pianists Egon Petri and Arthur Schnabel. She later studied composition in Paris with Nadia Boulanger, Edgard Varese and Max Deutsch. After her arrival in Israel in 1929 she became a concert pianist, taught at the Tel Aviv Academy of Music and devoted much of her time to composition and painting. Her composition “Hebrew Poem” was awarded first prize at a competition for women composers held in Paris in 1931. In 1949 her Quartet for Strings won a prize at the Bela Bartok Competition in Budapest. Verdina Shlonsky died February 20, 1990 in Tel Aviv.
