Zvi Nagan

Zvi Nagan (born Herbert Neugarten) was born in Buer near Gelsenkirchen, Germany in 1912. He studied violin, viola, and double bass and came to Israel in 1937. Nagan furthered his studies with Paul Ben-Haim, Joseph Kaminski, and Josef Tal. He received his M.A. degree in philosophy from Tel Aviv University and worked towards a Ph.D. in musicology from Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Nagan’s compositions include vocal music, including works for a cappella choir; pedagogic pieces for melodic instruments based mainly on Israeli folk tunes; and chamber pieces for various instrumental combinations. He died in Tel Aviv in 1986.
