About the creation
Chaconne and Scherzo for Piano (1956) consists of a theme with five variations and a scherzo. The theme is punctuated by harmonies at the cadences. The first variation is figurative, employing the different registers of the piano; the second variations is florid; the third has two voices and a conic-figurative style; a conic stretto of the theme provides us with the fcurh variation and the fifth is a summing-up of the harmonies of the theme. The scherzo forms, as it were, a sixth variation, at the end of which the theme in its three upper voices re-appears. The work was first performed in 1963 by the Israeli pianist Ora Rotem.
