About the creation

Miniatures for Bassoon was composed in 1969 having been commissioned by the national council for Culture and Art, affiliated to the Ministry of Education and Culture. It was commissioned in order to meet the need for original Israeli compositions for wind instruments, to be performed especially within the framework of various examinations and competitions in this country. The name of the composition refers to the brevity of its parts – the whole work being nothing but a theme with variations. A series of tones represents the theme, upon which are built the variations in the form of decorative figures and improvisations around the main notes of the tone-row. Most of the variations maintain the same number of bars as appear in the theme.
