About the creation

Partita for clarinet was composed in 1969, having been commissioned by the National Council for Culture and Art, affiliated to the Ministry of Education and Culture. It was commissioned in order to meet the need for original Israeli compositions for wind instruments, to be performed especially within the framework of various examinations and competitions in this country. The title "Partita" is designed solely to indicate the form of the work. Its four parts conform to the structure of the traditional partita or suite: slow-fast-sloe-fat. The first part is recitative-like, the second rhythmic, the third a kind of burlesque, and the fourth once again quick in movement. This last part has a son-like middle section, so that it is in the nature of a triptych. The whole work is built of a tone-row with permutations - and this tone-series is the only component linking the separate parts.
