The Sonata for Two Violins was composed in 1952 and first performed in 1953 by Lorand and Alice Fenyves. In 1954 it was awarded the Engel Prize of the Tel Aviv Municipality. The Sonata consists of five movements: the first movement is constructed as an Invention in the Phrygian Mode of C; the second is a Scherzo with two trios in the Dorian Mode of D; the third is a fugue in Aeolian E; the fourth is an instrumental Motet in Lydian F; and the last movement is a Rondo in Mixolydian G.
