About the creation
I wrote this work in 1974 as a commission from the Israel Music Institute for its Educational Music Series.
The melody is based on a song by the 17th century Yemenite rabbi Shalom Shabazi, which I heard when I was a child in kindergarten. At Passover our teacher would sing the song to us, and we would follow her with our small voices. I have adapted this childhood version for the clarinet and have added five variations of my own.
